Call Me Battle: February
Here we go again!
Two new contenders! As this is the ‘month of love’ I tried to pick 2 tunes thats were somewhat related to the theme. The winner of this battle will move on to the Battle Playoffs to be held at a later date. I’m really liking this newish format for the battles, as there’s little chance to grow tired of the same old winner each month.
Listen to these two songs with an open mind… and cast your vote for the one that you enjoy the most.
Stevie Wonder
Dr Hook

In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:
Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me. Keep an open mind and don’t be persuaded by the artist name.
Pick the contender that you prefer the most
Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.
Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out.
Are you a blogger and want to join in the fun with your own music battles on the 1st and 15th of each month (or only one battle a month) - reach out to Mr McCarthy to get yourself added to the list!
Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments! Voting Results will be posted on the 22nd of this month.

My vote is for "Sylvia"! I love how the singer injects so much desperation and heartbreak into his voice.
ReplyDeleteI prefer Dr. Hook which sounds less pop to me. Stevie wonders song was overplayed in my neck of the woods
ReplyDeleteI'll go with Stevie Wonder, mostly because I love the song.
ReplyDeleteStevie's song is among the sweetest, but Dr. Hook goes for the heartstrings. Well done! My vote goes to Stevie Wonder today, because it sounds like sunshine ;-)

ReplyDeleteMy brother, Judge Al Bondigas, likes Stevie Wonder but feels he was overrated.
I, on the other hand, love Stevie Wonder and don't feel he was overrated at all. In fact, just yesterday, I was listening to Stevie's song 'Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing' in honor of a dear friend of mine who passed away back in 1989.
The aforementioned song (with "Chevrolet" being ingeniously sung as harmony in the background), 'All In Love Is Fair', 'Golden Lady', 'Superstition', 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life', 'For Once In My Life', 'My Cherie Amour', and on and on -- I could listen to Stevie every day and never get tired of him.
However, having said all that, I gotta add that I've never cared for 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'... about 150,000 times over the course of six and a half minutes. Sorry, Stevie, but if the lady didn't understand you after the first three and a half minutes, then she was probably deaf!
To me, this Stevie Wonder song is just a bit too sappy and way too repetitive, and way too repetitive. Also, he repeats the chorus too many times, and I feel the song is overly sappy. (It's a good thing that wasn't a long distance call! Can you imagine how much money that would have cost Mr. Wonder just to say "I love you"?!)
So, although Stevie Wonder is *NOT* overrated, I am voting for DR. HOOK.
And although Judge Al thinks Stevie *IS* overrated, he is rulin' for THE WONDERFUL MAN.

IMO, Stevie Wonder was better in the 60s, when he was known as "Little Stevie Wonder". Much more R&B than pop. This song especially makes for an annoying earworm. Dr. Hook, on the other hand, tells a tale full of longing and pathos. I much prefer that!
