Heat Wave
Hey there!
Guess who forgot to post their June battle results? Yup. That would be me. This past month has been one big blur. Here we are knocking on the door of Independence Day, but didn't we just have Memorial Day? At any rate here are the results:
The Spinners received 5 votes, and McCarthy's bro saved it from a complete shutout with his vote for Joe South.
Side note: I put together this July battle way back in May (so... basically just yesterday) I hope it still has some relevance :) I'll do my best to remember to post the results much sooner!
I had a different battle planned for today, but with the rising temperatures recently, I thought this one would be a better battle. So, putting the planned battle off until Next month.
That website we all rely on from time to time tells us this about today’s song:
"Heat Wave" is a 1963 song written by the Holland–Dozier–Holland songwriting team. It was first made popular by the Motown vocal group Martha and the Vandellas. Released as a 45 rpm single on July 9, 1963, on the Motown subsidiary Gordy label, it hit number one on the Billboard Hot R&B chart—where it stayed for four weeks—and peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was recorded 12 years later by rock vocalist Linda Ronstadt on her Platinum-selling 1975 album Prisoner in Disguise. Ronstadt's version of the song was released as a single in September 1975, reaching number 5 in Billboard, 4 in Cash Box, and 6 in Record World. In 2010, British musician Phil Collins spent a single week (number 28) on the Billboard Adult Contemporary listing with his retooling of the song—a smooth combination of both versions.
I suspect this one might be a blow out, but let’s just hope the air that’s blowing is COLD air!
The first contender is Linda Ronstadt
Second Contender: Phil Collins
In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:
Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me.
Pick the contender that you prefer the most
Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.
Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out. *I think this is a recent list, if not, Cathy keeps a current list on her battle posts.
Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments!
Voting results will be posted on July 8!
Oops something went wrong. Blogger just ate my comment to you. I'm wondering if it didn't like me leaving my link to my battle. Anyway...great showdown! You picked a song that's totally appropriate for this time of year. I generally prefer male to female vocals so when you put the vocal talents of such a fine singer like Phil Collins then it made my job easier. I'm giving my vote to...PHIL COLLINS! Happy Independence Day, my friend!! Enjoy your weekend. ;)

ReplyDeleteIn your comment on my own BOTB installment, you said that your Battle wasn't anything to write home about. But, actually, I think this is an extremely good Battle!
To begin with, I've always liked the song, going back to the original by Martha & The Vandellas. And both covers here are very good, too.
Even though I would ordinarily tend to side with a Big Band arrangement on most songs, and generally prefer male vocalists to female singers, in this case, I'm giving my BOTB bote to LINDA RONSTADT. I feel like her "Heat Wave" sizzles a bit more, and that was a nice, fiery little guitar solo in there, played by someone who knew his way around a fretboard.
Linda was always a knucklehead when it came to politics, but in her yout, she was pretty "hot" -- like a heat wave! (But I did not allow her superior looks to influence my voting for her rather than the much less pretty Phil Collins.)
Incidentally, my brother, NAPPY, is casting another bote for Linda.
LINDA RONSTADT: 2 botes
Phil Collins: 0 botes
("No anchovies, Please.")
I think my work here is done.

I actually thought Phil Collins's version was pretty good, better than Martha and The Vandellas, even--but not as good as Linda Ronstadt's. The lovely Linda gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteThere is a heatwave and I love this song. I go with Linda whom I love. Her voice is so strong and fits perfectly with this song.
ReplyDeleteIt's been pretty warm here in L.A. but not like some parts of the country. At least my house has been staying cool enough where I haven't had to turn on the AC. We'll have to turn it on for the Fourth since we've got family coming over and they don't like it when it gets too hot.
ReplyDeleteBoth versions are for the most part equally good, but Linda's voice wins my vote.

I'll go with Linda on this one
