#4M: Farm Aid 1985
Welcome back for Monday’s Music Moves Me (aka #4M)
It’s a new month and that means we have a new co-host/musical conductor, and that conductor is Yours Truly!
Each year, Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host a Farm Aid festival to bring together a wide variety of artists, farmers and fans for one mission: keeping family farmers on the land. Farm Aid is an all-day festival that brings together incredible music, good food and hands-on activities to get folks in touch with the roots of our food. Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised $57 million to help family farmers thrive all over the country while inspiring millions of people to take part in the Good Food Movement. This year's Farm Aid takes place Sept 21 in Wisconsin.
I remember watching the first Farm Aid as it was televised live. I recall feeling quite proud of my country, and proud of the farmers that I know that have devoted their entire lives to helping with our food supply. I grew up in the heart of potato country. My dad grew up in a family that raised sheep, and eventually he worked for the Soil and Water Conservation District helping farmers preserve their land and helping them get the full use of their property. I get excited whenever I go to Five Guys Burgers and the name of the farm is posted on the wall showing where their potatoes have come from. Many of those farms belong to families of people I know.
I’ve selected 10 songs that were performed at the inaugural Farm Aid in 1985 for my playlist today.
- Bob Dylan - Maggie’s Farm
- BB King - How Blue Can You Get
- Roy Orbison - Mean Woman Blues
- Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Don’t Bring Me Down
- Bon Jovi - Heart of America
- Foreigner - Hot Blooded
- John Mellencamp - Pink Houses
- Daryl Hall, Billy Joel, & Bonnie Raitt - Every Time You Go Away
- Sammy Hagar & Eddie Van Halen - Rock and Roll
- Neil Young - Hey Hey My My

Mary,
ReplyDeleteThis was an interesting and different theme which I very much appreciated. I love it when someone throws a new way of thinking mewsically. I've heard of Farm Aid but I can't say that I've ever watched if televised before. I might have known once upon a time some of the artists involved but that long slipped my mind. Very cool benefit, though. It just dawned on me that Ben Stiller could pass for Bob Dylan. Do you see the resemblance? I like how you used mewsic vid of your artists purrforming at Farm Aid, very cool! I didn't know that Foreigner played this gig. I'd love to see the in concert. Your entire playlist is phenomenal and I enjoyed listening to it this morning. Have a boogietastic week and thanks for co-hosting this month, girl - you rock! ;)
Thanks, Cathy!
DeleteI figured there have been plenty of benefits since the inception that the lineup of artists would make for interesting choices for everyone.
And yes, I do think the Ben Stiller could possibly play Bob Dylan in a movie.
the 80's were big on these "aid' concerts. so many talented people lending thier voices to a good cause. we could use more of that.
ReplyDeleteYou're right! We could use more of these type of benefits! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteGreat songs. I so remember watching Farm Aid and I think I called in to donate $5 or so. This was a great theme.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patrick!
DeleteI had a lot of fun with this one.
This ended up being a pretty good theme, Mary, thanks! And your song choices were great!
ReplyDeleteThanks, John!
DeleteI wanted to come up with something a little bit different for us all, and I'm glad that this one worked out the way that it did.
Great songs. I'll listen while I craft later. Thanks!

Thanks, Janet!
DeleteI hope you enjoy your crafting time :)
Alright, your theme kinda threw me, but as I got into it and found out who donated their time talk about AWESOME THEME my friend! Wow great choices too. Here's the thing during that time I was working and going to school and raising kids (by myself I might add, but I had the best kids ever). This was an interesting and different theme which I very much appreciated. I love it when someone throws a new way of thinking mewsically. I've heard of Farm Aid but I can't say that I've ever watched when it was televised. My schedule was already made out, but to see now Dylan and Nelson sort of sing together and play together... all I can say is WOW! The best part of this was to hear BB KING... the man himself. WOW! I'm so glad he was there. It was a very great show/benefit. I loved what you had posted too. It just took me deep into the day! Fantastic! Foreigner played and I surely would've loved to be there. Your playlist is phenomenal to say the list. Great job my friend... all the way around! BIG HUGE HUGS... Thank you and also thanks for co-hosting this month, you so rock! BIG HUGS and if ever you want to again lemme know and we'll fit in for whatever month you want. Have a rockin week! Hugs from me and Charlie!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope that Farm Aid money is really going to the right places. I don't trust anyone these days! And I'd like to think that the hearts of these musicians is in the right place. I like most all of their music, but not sure about the motives.

Tossing It Out
This was such a rockin' concert. Could I imagine Billy Joel with Darryl Oates and Bonnie Raitt? No, not until I saw it! Such an All-Star lineup. Which one did I enjoy the most? Sammy Hagar- his energy was so amazing. But then again, we were all much younger back then!
ReplyDeleteAll are great selections, but oh, man, I love me some Neil Young, especially that song.
