#4M: Celebrating the Dog Days of Summer

Welcome back for Monday’s Music Moves Me (aka #4M)

We’re under the direction of our co-host/conductor for this month - John Holton!
Today’s theme is ‘Songs about dogs (or any pets) in honor of the end of the Dog Days of Summer‘

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, which coincide with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. This is soon after the Summer Solstice, which of course also indicates that the worst summer heat will soon set in.

I know there are quite a few ‘Dog’ songs out there, so let’s just get to it! In the interest of time (mine and yours), I’ve narrowed the list down to 5

  1. ‘Dog Days Are Over' - Florence and the Machine- This song was the first that came to mind when I thought about ‘Dog Days of Summer’ The song was originally scheduled for release on 24 November 2008 through Moshi Moshi Records in the UK as the album's second single, but was later pushed back for release on 1 December 2008. A day later on 2 December 2008 the single was released in download and seven inch vinyl format through IAMSOUND Records in the US. The B-side to the single is a cover of "You Got the Love" by The Source featuring Candi Staton which later was confirmed as a track on their debut album and the band's fifth single. The single reached the top 30 in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  2. ‘Walking The Dog’ - Rufus Thomas - This song was released on his 1963 album Walking the Dog. It was his signature hit and also his biggest, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1963 and remaining on the Hot 100 for 14 weeks. The lyrics make references to children's nursery rhymes, especially Miss Mary Mack.
  3. ‘Atomic Dog’ - George Clinton - from his 1982 album Computer Games. The track was released as a single in December 1982 and became the P-Funk collective's last to reach #1 on the U.S. R&B Chart. The single failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 although it has attained a level of stature since then, partly due to its having been sampled in several hip hop songs.
  4. ‘Black Dog’ - Led Zeppelin - This song was the opening track on their fourth album (1971). It was released as a single in the United States and in Australia with "Misty Mountain Hop" as the B-side, reaching number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 in Australia.
  5. ‘Hey Bulldog’ - The Beatles - released on their 1969 soundtrack album Yellow Submarine. Credited to Lennon–McCartney but written primarily by John Lennon, it was finished in the studio by Lennon and McCartney. In 2018, the music staff of Time Out London ranked "Hey Bulldog" at number 27 on their list of the best Beatles songs.

  1. Mary,

Cool playset for today's theme. I thought I knew some of these but then they didn't sound all that familiar to my ear. The only that actually did is 'Black Dog'. Thanks for the introduction. ;) Oh yeah, I'm already thinking about Rocktober Music Fest and have already gotten about a week's worth of posts done, so I'll be playing along with you again. Thanks for joining the 4M crew on the dance floor. Have a boogietastic week, my dear!

  6. Another fine selection - this week I was reintroduced to many songs I had forgotten all about, including "Bulldog" and "Atomic Dog" but that Rufus, I will be grooving to him for some time to come. I don't want to think about October (because it means "winter is coming") but I'll get there eventually.
