Valentines Not Just For Lovers Plus BOTB Results!

We were given the theme ‘Valentines Day’ for today’s episode of Monday’s Music Moves Me. I know that not everyone wants to hear love songs. The holiday itself is pretty much overrated.

When contemplating what I would include in today’s post, I considered a list of anti-love songs, but while I am quite jaded when it comes to all thing Love, there is a tiny sliver of me that contains a drop of hope.

Let’s take a trip back into time, shall we?

It’s the year 1966. There were two bands in Perth, Australia - The Spektors and The Winstons. These two bands combined to form a new band. This new band called themselves - The Valentines.

The Valentines had two lead singers. One of the lead singers later went on to become a music journalist and manager of Divinyls. The other later became lead vocalist for a little band called AC/DC.

In 1967, the band moved to Melbourne, Australia where they experienced quite a bit of success as a band and began touring.

The band primarily played bubblegum pop music, but by the end of 1968, they were playing more rock than bubblegum.

In 1969, the band struggled with its identity, with the members being pulled in different directions. There was a drug-bust in September of that year and in 1970 the band split amicably.

Here’s a playlist of The Valentines.

Who would've thought that one of these lead singers would go on to be lead vocalist for AC/DC?

Be sure to come back later this week for the upcoming Battle of the Bands. The battle will go live Feb 15.

Speaking of battles... I need to share with you the results from the battle that took place on Feb 1.

The song was 'Love Me Two Times', a crowd favorite from The Doors. We had two contestants step up to the plate to vie for the title of Best Cover.

The Final Tally:

Joan Jett with 2 votes
Lou Gramm with 4 votes

  1. The music on my computer isn't working! Can't believe it! When I saw "Build Me Up Buttercup", I immediately thought (as you pointed out) Later with AC/DC? Really? I promise to come back - my music wasn't working last Monday morning, either. How strange! But thank you for the musical journey I had no idea about, even if I couldn't hear it. 1. Oh No! I do hope that you are able to come back and listen. They sound nothing like AC/DC or the Divinyls. Thanks for dropping by!

    2. My volume button has returned - and I gave a listen to several of the selections - and played them for my husband, who is a big AC/DC fan. He couldn't believe it. And thank you for making something totally different out of the theme. I can't wait to see what you do with my Spotlight Dancer theme on the 26th!

I just checked out your theme pick. This should be interesting! I'll put on my thinking cap and try to come up with something good.

  2. Mary,

Fabulous band choice for our 'love song' theme with Valentine's Day this week. :) I had totally forgotten about this group but it was a delight to listen to this wonderful playlist of familiar and new-to-me tunes. I didn't know the lead singers went on to become members of AC/DC. lol Thanks for sharing this tidbit with me! It's great having you on the dance floor, my friend.

    1. Hi Cathy!

It was just one of the lead singers that went on to join AC/DC, the other one became a music journalist and manager for the Divinyls. I figured this would be a welcome break from the drippy, sappy love crud going around. Glad that you enjoyed it!

  3. MARY, MARY, QUITE EXTRAORDINARY ~
Whoa! For a couple minutes there you had me thinking that The Valentines were the original artist of 'Build Me Up, Buttercup'. I actually had to go look it up in my Billboard book of Top 40 hits. I find that it was The Foundations who had the hit, and The Valentines were doing a cover in this video.

That would have been a fantastic trivia question if in fact The Valentines had written it and scored the hit with it.

That was a low voter turnout for the BOTB contest. Maybe you need to spread the word again with your Facebook community. It'll probably take awhile before word spreads that some of us have reverted back to the original Two-Per-Month BOTB schedule.

Wouldn't that have been something? Mind = Blown!

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised at the low turnout for this past battle. I don't know if I was just really distracted, or if people just weren't interested this time around. I'll have to give some extra effort for the next little while. Hopefully I'll bring in a bigger draw. I've got an earworm lined up for this next battle, so be prepared!

Life here in Spudland is... hmm did I mention I have been distracted lately? Not sure yet if it's a good thing or a major disaster about to strike. Time will tell.

Thanks for dropping in on my little 'love fest'. Always good to see you here.

    1. Shhh Don't tell anyone, but... sometimes I like a little bubblegum pop. It seems these guys heated up and burned out quickly before moving on in their careers. And now, sadly, both lead singers are no longer with us.

    1. Hi Naila!

A friend shared a link with me a few years ago. Today just seemed like a good day for me to pass on the information. It just goes to show - you can't judge a book by it's cover.

  8. Hi Mary; I'm with you about Valentine's Day and will take it a step further. It's a fake holiday, invented by the retail industry. Hubby and I have never participated. We make our own Valentine's Day when it suits us! ☺ Who knew that Bon Scott used to sing Bubblegum music? Fascinating! Sorry to have missed your last BOTB. Joan Jett lost?? Now I'm curious enough to go back and check it out. She's a favourite of mine.

    1. Hi Debbie!

Good to see you out and about. It's true, I've started doing the twice a month battles again. I am hoping to have a better turn-out for this next battle. Maybe Stephen is right, perhaps I need to drop my link in a few share threads on facebook for comments. I tend to avoid those threads as the comments almost always are insincere or simply 'I have never heard of this artist before'. But now that I'm a moderator in one of those groups, I may give that thread a shot this week.
I see you have a new post today. I'll be sure to drop by. Enjoy Valentine's Day every day.

  10. Hey Mary,
Great choice for this theme! I never heard of the Valentines before. The name definitely suits the bubblegum slant. Shocking that Bon Scott was part of them! Very interesting.
The lead singer Vince -- what's his last name? And how and when did he pass?
I have to say, I was absolutely mesmerized by his arm movements in his performances! It was almost like he didn't quite know what to do with his arms...and then in those puffy blousy shirts! It was fabulous! Lol. Loved it! I'll be coming back just to watch these live gigs again...

Happy Valentine's Day. I always hate V-day when you're in a new relationship. There's so much uncertainty: will he or won't he participate in the day and make it special for me? You'll have to let me know...
    Have fun!

    1. Hey Michele!

Vince Lovegrove was the other singer. He was killed in a car accident in 2012. The videos are a lot of fun to watch.

I tell you, the signals I am getting are all kinds of messed up. He definitely is keeping me guessing!

See you on Thursday for the battle!

    2. Girl, you probably don't want to hear what I have to say because I'm completely jaded but I'll say it anyway: Friend-zone him. Who wants games at our age?? :)
Oh, Don't listen to me. I'm so anti-relationship... I hate relationships. They get my head all f***ed up. I like my peace of mind too much and I don't find relationships very peaceful... So I just stay far far away from them.
Seriously though, I hope whatever you want this to be, it will be...
See, Deep deep inside me there is a hopeless romantic. She's just buried way far away.... <3

    1. Haha! yes, the girls will forever be screaming. I mean, I completely lost my voice at a Foo Fighters concert. No relationship issues here, he's just keeping me guessing. Isn't that part of the fun?

  14. Oh my gosh, I haven't thought about "Build me up, Buttercup" in the longest time! Doesn't it just make you smile whever you hear it? Also, I had no idea Bon Scott was in the Valentines and also AC/DC. To me, that speaks to his talent. If he's able to have success on both extremes of the spectrum. ps: I think Valentine's Day is highly overrated, and there have been many moments in my life that I've been jaded about love too. Maybe it's here to remind us that there are still hints of goodness and love in an often uncaring world. x

  16. It's kind of cool to learn the background of some of our favorite bands. It's interesting one who started with more pop music ended up eventually becoming the lead singer of AC/DC, one of the premiere metal and rock bands. I'll have to check out a bit more about the Valentine's now.
