Jingle Jangle Jungle Goes Back To Skool

Time again for Monday’s Music Moves Me!  We have a fun theme for you today. The theme for today is ‘songs about school’.  Last year, I had quite a popular post with some back to school songs that I used in a Friday Five segment, so my work was cut out for me to come up with five more songs this year. Actually, it really wasn’t that hard once I started thinking about it :)

Alright boys and girls it's time to take off your dunce caps, and put on your thinking hats!  It’s time to get back to school!

In effort to cut down on the time it takes for the post to load, I've put all of the songs in a playlist.

  1. "ABC" is a 1970 number-one hit by The Jackson 5. It was released on February 24. "ABC" knocked The Beatles' Let It Be off the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, and was number one on the soul singles chart for four weeks.
  2. "Adult Education" is a song by American duo Daryl Hall & John Oates, released as a single on February 18, 1984. The song is featured on the duo's second compilation album Rock 'n Soul Part 1. It was one of two new tracks that were recorded specifically for the compilation release and hit number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100. This song was featured in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. "Another Brick in the Wall" is the title of three songs set to variations of the same basic theme, on Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opera, The Wall, subtitled Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. All parts were written by Pink Floyd's bassist, Roger Waters.
  4. "Teacher, Teacher" is by 38 Special and appears on the album Flashback: The Best Of .38 Special (1987).
  5. "My Old School" is a single drawn from Steely Dan's 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy. It reached number 63 in the Billboard charts. The song was written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and is in the key of G major. The original studio track features a guitar solo by Jeff Baxter.

What are some of your favorite back to school songs?

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked and Curious as a Cathy.  Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.

  1. Mary,

"ABC" is a fun, catchy tune and the Jackson's really rock the schoolhouse down with it! MJ once as a cute charismatic little feller. Too bad his life ended too soon. This tune and three others made my playlist but Hall & Oates, "Adult Education" I totally forgot about but just added it. Thanks for meeting me (and the 4M gals) in the school yard...I mean on the dance floor with this fabulous school days mewsic!

    1. HI Cathy

I'm sure the five I posted last year made your list as well. This was a fun theme, even if there was a bit of overlap of the songs.

    2. Mary, it's hard to not cheat off (intentional or not) the others with this theme but it's always fun regardless. :) If we go with this theme next year then we need to make it more challenging. How can we do this? Think. Think. Think. Oh well...I don't have to strain my brain just yet but I'm gonna keep it tucked away to improve upon come next September. ;)

    3. Oh, I wasn't implying that anyone was cheating. Just commenting on the overlap. I once made long playlists that included everything under the sun. Now, I just stick to only five or ten songs so that the next time the theme comes around, I'll be able to post something I hadn't already posted. And who knows, maybe next time I may even re-use a song or two that I posted previously. They are all good - why not enjoy?

  2. I picked Teacher, Teacher as it is from one of my favorite movies "Teacher".

    1. Hi Patrick!

Teacher, Teacher is a good song. It's not one that I think of often, but I like it.

  3. Hi Mary,
Great playlist! I LOVE the Jackson 5 -- ABC is a fun song. It's wild to see Michael Jackson back when he was so young. The story of his rise and his success is certainly fascinating. My other J5 fav from that period is Rockin' Robin.

I don't remember ever hearing Hall & Oates Adult Education. It's good! They always were a great duo. And I'm also a .38 Special fan but never heard Teacher Teacher. Thanks for the introduction.

I also used Steely Dan's My Old School. I'm just so surprised that the song didn't chart higher. I think the song is brilliant: the guitar work is amazing and the horns blow me away. It's such a rich song.

Hope your week is starting off on a good note...
    Have a great one.

    1. Thanks, Michele!

I was surprised at how many in the hop used Pink Floyd. I loved Rockin' Robin as well. I was a huge Hall & Oates fan back in the day. I used their album covers as wall art in my room. I didn't remember Teacher, Teacher either, but once I listened to it, I knew it was good for the theme, and Steely Dan - they were such a great duo, I couldn't leave them out of the fun.

Good to see you back in the mix, so to speak. Hope you're having a great week.

  4. I had forgotten all about Adult Education - thank you for rekindling that memory. ABC, yes, it is such a fun song - seeing Michael Jackson as a young one, though, makes me wistful. And once again, I say I need to learn to make a playlist - it's such a good idea for those with mobile phones and others. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. Hi Alana

Playlists aren't that difficult. When you're on YouTubee, under the video that plays, just to the right of 'share' click on the plus sign. It will say 'Add to'. Create your playlist that way. Then, to get the embed code for your playlist - go over to the far left hand side - at the top click on the three dashes and then down to library. Select the playlist you just created. Now, this is where YouTube recently made a change. It used to be you could simply select share & then embed, but now... you select edit, share, and then embed. Hope this helps!

  7. That's a mighty crowded school bus, MMQE. Me, I'd rather walk to school (12 miles each way, in the snow, backwards, with a dog biting my ankles) than put up with all those loud, snotty kids.

Here are a couple more school-related songs, and I'll bet you ain't heard 'em afore now...

You always manage to amaze me. I hadn't heard the Dwight Yoakum tune before, but Tiny Tim's little ditty was written in 1907 and covered by quite a few people. (I didn't learn this fact until yesterday when I visited Alana's post)

I always preferred the back of the school bus. Everyone knows that's where all the fun takes place.

  8. Great set here, Mary! I'm going through and merging everyone's list in with mine, and we'll have a huge list of all the "school songs." I'm adding suggestions, too, like Stephen's above and the ones he suggested to me.
