Battle of the Bands - Happy Together #BOTB #4M
May 15. Time for the next Battle of the Bands. I was going to go with something silly, but…
I’m also participating in the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by Callie of JAmerican Spice, Stacy of Stacy Uncorked and Cathy from Curious as a Cathy.
Today’s theme for the Monday’s Music Moves Me is ‘60’s Rock Songs’ which means I better not do something silly… this time.
"Happy Together" is a 1967 song from The Turtles' album of the same name. Released in February 1967, the song knocked The Beatles' "Penny Lane" out of the #1 slot for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the group's only chart-topper. "Happy Together" reached #12 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1967. The song was written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, former members of a band known as The Magicians. The song had been rejected a dozen times before The Turtles were offered it, and the demo acetate was worn out.
I usually only have 2 contenders, but I was having a difficult time choosing, so today we have 3 contenders in the battle.
Contender # 1 Flobots
Contender #2 Hugo Montenegro
Contender #3 The Nylons
Please vote for either Flobots, Hugo Montenegro, or The Nylons in the comments. Voting will end on May 21, 2017 at 6pm EST with results being posted on May 22.
I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands as well. You can find a current list HERE, or on Stephen’s blog (you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop on his blog). Don’t forget to visit X-Mas Dolly and the other Monday’s Music Moves Me players as well.
The cheetah and I are voting for the Flobots!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Patrick!
DeleteFirst vote in, for the Flobots!

Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou do anything you want that's silly. Maybe the sillier the better, too. :D Excellent 60s rock song to hit the dance floor to this morning with three new spins for this round of BoTB. Nicely done! This battle was narrowed easily down to the last two contenders for consideration. Flobots semi rap style didn't do much for me or the song so I kicked them out of the race almost immediately. I love the opening with the guitar notes of Hugo Montenegro. Their vocals and mewsic arrangement remind me of the Turtle's original. The Nylons' excellent harmony, warm, smooth vocals made it a joy to listen to their cover with a simplistic music arrangement. I went back and forth between these two artists. It was not an easy decision and I'm still not sure if I'm giving my vote to the right one because I like different things about the two. I think I'm going to give my vote to Hugo Montenegro! Thanks for hitting the dance floor with the 4M gals and have a tunetastic week, my friend!
#1 Billboard Hot 100 Songs from 1961 #4M & #BoTB
Thanks, Cathy!
DeleteNow you see why I had to go with 3 contenders. Each one brings a little something different. Some are subtle, the others - in your face! I'm having a blast with the 4M - I went a little overboard with my post for next week, but so much fun! Thanks for dropping by to cast your vote.
~Mary
I was a big Turtles fan back in their heyday. Great song out of their repertoire. I'm familiar with the Nylons version as I got on a Nylons kick back in the eighties and bought maybe all of their albums during that time which included this version of the Turtles song. The Montenegro version was interesting, but not interesting enough--kind of an elevator ride back in time.
ReplyDeleteThe Flobots injected an interesting energy into the song, but it started wearing thin on me when they got into the rap.
My preference is my old favorite group The Nylons.

Hi Lee
DeleteThree votes in, and all three contenders have a vote each. This is certainly going to be an interesting battle. I'm going to have to delve a little deeper into the Nylons, I've run across a few of their songs now that I've liked.
~Mary
Lol, you and me are both having a hard time choosing! I think the Hugh Montenegro is most familiar to me, I must have heard it as a child but my vote will go with Flobots. I kind of like their take on it!
ReplyDeleteHi Tania
DeleteThe Flobots do have an interesting spin on the song. Thanks for dropping by to cast your vote.
~Mary
Well, I totally appreciate your time and sharing yourself with us too!!! Great song choice you picked here and as far as the tune I kind of like the second one more than the others in how the Hugo Montenegro put it, but I like the third one's video better! ~snicker-snicker~ I dunno it's just me and my weirdo opinion! hahaha Have a great day my friend and thanks again for joining us! ROCK ON GIRLFRIEND & have a great week. Oh & Tomorrow I have my Show Off Tuesday so if you'd like to share any of your reviews or giveaways please post them on my linky tomorrow! BIG HUGS!
ReplyDeleteLOL Marie
DeleteI'll give you a split vote - one for Hugo Montenegro, and one for The Nylons. I was telling Cathy that I went a bit overboard with next week's 4M theme. Can't wait to share it with everyone.
~Mary
Great song choice for sure! And I'm going to vote for the FloBots! :) Thanks for the dance! :)

Thanks, Stacy!
DeleteI'll be stopping by your place to check out your tunes as well - Your title has my attention!
~Mary
Cool - a three-way! ☺ Not at all silly and this is really tough, given that they're all so different and interesting. In the end, I'm choosing The FloBots, because they had me dancing in my chair. Fun battle, Mary!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debbie!
DeleteI had been tinkering with an idea surrounding Tiny Tim, but it got put on the back burner. It might still happen in the near future, One never really knows :) This battle is looking really good so far, nice and tight!
~Mary
I'm going with The Nylons here. I like the harmony it starts with and how it holds pretty close to the original. The Flobots' cover was okay until they got to the rap, and Hugo Montenegro's was a little lifeless and not at all what I would hav expected fro him.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John!
DeleteI've got you down for The Nylons. This is looking like a really good battle so far. Definitely not a blow out here.
~Mary
Hahaha, I have two things you are going to hate. One I prefer Simple Plan's cover over any of these (and I hate simple plan). Two I didn't know Flobots sang anything but handlebars!? ;)
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness my vote is Flobots.
LOL I did give Simple Plan some thought, but there were so many different covers to choose from, I had to narrow it down. And thanks, now I have 'Handlebars' stuck in my head!!

MMQE ~
ReplyDeleteSuch a depressing song.
I just jest.
OK, the Flopbots... I thought it was pretty interesting -- even the Rap section was kind of cool. I mean, mentioning Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer an' all, it was almost Tiny Tim weird. But they blew it when they tried to pull off a second section of Rap. By that point, I was done with it. It was becoming annoying and I shut 'er down at the 2:41 mark.
I loved the HUGO MONTENEGRO version. Maybe even more so than The Turtles original.
As soon as The Nylons started singing I thought: Look out! This is gonna be a tough one to call!
But actually, it turned out NOT to be that tough after all, because that ongoing mumbling by the guy with the very deep voice kind of ruined it for me. So, a very enthusiastic vote for HUGO & MONTE.

DeleteI appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule and all to give these songs a listen and cast your vote. It's going to be a close one, and I may need to check the Florida votes for those pesky hanging chads. I'm just glad that I don't have to go by electoral votes here - it could get messy!
~M
MARY, I can't for the life of me understand why you referred to my schedule as "busy". For me, every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is very relaxing and easygoing. They start at 4:30 AM when my alarm clock wakes me up. I brush my teeth, make coffee, check my Email, get suited-up for work, and at 5:30 AM I'm on the freeway to drive the 10 most dangerous miles in America. I clock in at 6:00 AM and work until 6:30 PM. Then I drive the 10 most dangerous miles in America back home. I shower, do my meditation session, get my suit and lunch ready for the next day, check my Email, and if I'm lucky, I've got maybe 30 minutes to cast BOTB votes before I set my clock for 4:30 AM, turn out the lights and crawl into bed.
DeleteNuttin' "busy" about THAT schedule, amiright?
I sometimes wonder how musicians come up with their band names -- many of which just seem silly, even downright ridiculous. For example: THE FLOBOTS. Seriously, WTH were they thinking?!
Doesn't that sound like some "As Advertised On TV" product?
FLOBOT... it chops, it slices, it dices, it never has a headache when you're in the mood! How have you gotten along without one? Order your Flobot in the next 24 hours and receive, as our gift to you, the 10 Flobot attachments, absolutely free!
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!...
Operators are standing by. Just mention the promotional code "I want my Flobot" and you will also receive, at no additional cost to you, the rechargeable Flobot Power Pack, so you can take your Flobot with you to... the beach, the park, the concert! Or anywhere you want great Flobot action!

I love the creativity and the fluidity of your wonderfully sarcastic mind.
DeleteUp until just recently I thought the Flobots only had one song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA But I like your version better!
~M
Aww, shucks. Thanks. Twarnt nuttin'.

I cannot say which I like best because I don't really care for any (!) which surprised me. Maybe I'm being a snob for the original. That happens for me sometimes.
ReplyDeletehaha! Yes, Sometimes I do prefer the original as well.

It wasn't easy for me to cast my vote.I loved this song then, and I love it now. I believe it was used in I really love when a group covers a song and makes it their own. In this case I cast my vote for Hugo Montenegro!
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqueline!
DeleteI think each of the contenders brought a little something of their own to the table, it just depends on how you feel about the subtle change if you like it or not. Another vote for Hugo! Thanks!
~Mary
Hey Mary! So good to be back. And this is a fun battle to come back to! I can see why you had a hard time choosing the contenders. I like all three actually. But I'm giving my vote to The Nylons.
ReplyDeleteLove The Turtles -- such a good song, this one.
Michele at Angels Bark
Michele,
DeleteIt is really good to have you back! This is such a close race. It may turn into a three-way tie! I don't think that's ever happened in the history of BOTB.
~Mary
I have loved The Nylons since high school. As soon as I saw them in the mix, I figured they'd be tough to beat. I didn't like the rap one at all. Hugo was pretty good. Not spectacular but solid. But, I love The Nylons. So, no surprise...they get my vote.
ReplyDeleteThanks Robin!
DeleteI've got your vote for the Nylons counted.
~Mary
#2 Hugo Montenegro gets my vote
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike!
DeleteStay tuned for the results tomorrow... We have some history making going on right here!
~Mary
Great song choice you picked. I loved post.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get to vote in this one, but very good line up!
