Andy Kim
Andy Kim is a Canadian pop/rock singer. He was born in Montreal, Quebec as Andrew Youakim. Sources are uncertain as to the year he was born. Some cite his birth year as 1946, while others cite 1952.
Wanting to obscure his Lebanese ethnicity, he started his music career under the name Andy Kim. In 1976, he altered the spelling to Andy Kimm and in 1978 he adopted the stage name of Baron Longfellow, eventually shortening that to Longfellow.
In 1968, he co-wrote the hit single “Sugar, Sugar” for the Archies. He and fellow musician, Jeff Barry went on to write more songs for the Archies, as well as for The Monkees.
In 1969, he had a hit single with “Baby, I Love You”.
In 1970, he earned the Gold Leaf (Juno) Award for Canada’s Best Male Vocalist.
In 1974, he had another hit “Rock Me Gently”
His musical popularity seems to be about as fickle as his name changes. In recent years, he has produced more music, but it has not been met with as great a success as his earlier work.

I've got a fun theme planned for this year, and I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!

I was never an Andy Kim fan. Maybe a bit too schlocky for me at the time.

Tossing It Out
Well, I can't please everyone. That's the beauty of music. It's subjective. We all have our various tastes in what we think sounds good.

I have always loved 'ROCK ME GENTLY'. That's a great song that'll probably be stuck in my mind now for the rest of the day.

I live in Toronto and I never knew this singer was Canadian. I remember his songs. I never knew he was a co-wrote Sugar Sugar for the Archies though!
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqueline!
DeleteThat's one of the things I love most about this blog, is that we all learn something new. I didn't know he co-wrote the song either until I did some research on him. Thanks for stopping by!

Andy Kim is Canada's answer to Engelbert Humperdinck. ☺ Although not a huge fan, I love "I Wish I Were" from 1970. Click HERE to listen. He's still touring.
ReplyDeleteI think of all of his songs, Sugar, Sugar and Rock Me Gently are among my favorites. Glad to hear he is still making the rounds. I hate to see musicians stop just because they are older.

So interesting to learn more about an artist. I recognize a couple of the songs but never thought too much about the artist. Very fun!
ReplyDeleteI used to never be able to match artist to song. But doing this blog has really helped me learn so very much!

ReplyDeleteIf you want to do a story on encounters with rock stars, questions I asked them, let me know. I am also a music enthusiast and have many stories I can tell. I used to do radio in montreal.
ReplyDeleteSugar Sugar is one of the most enduring classics and one that hasn't been played to death on classic radio as well....Longfellow*LOL*
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I also like earning more about musicians. Good to know he's still around, too.
