Zero She Flies
Zero She Flies is an Alt. folk outfit started in 2012. At the moment they are a recording project, but may look to expand into performing. All the music is written by Maria Chidgey and Jamie Field, he actually writes all the lyrics and half the music, and Maria writes the other half, sing, record it all, produce and arrange. They have an ex Guildhall woodwind player called Wendy Marks, and a bass player called Shane Webb. They have been working on material for a while now, and so far have released a single called 'Small Mercy', and their first EP called 'The River'
Both Maria and Jamie answered the questions:
1. When did you first start singing (or playing your instrument)?
Maria: I started my classical vocal training at ten, but no-one could shut me up for many years before that. So I guess as long as I can remember!
Jamie: I didn't pick up a guitar until I was about 13 or 14. So I was a late starter.
2. What was the first song you recall singing (or playing)?
Maria: Michael Jackson Thriller, me singing with my sister on 'drums'
Jamie: It would almost certainly have been something by Neil Young - or maybe Carole King.
3. Who are your musical inspirations?
Maria: Tori Amos, Bjork, Lamb, Submotion Orchestra, Imogen Heap
Jamie: Early 70s singer/songwriters would top the bill. People like Carole King, Neil Young, Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Al Stewart, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Judee Sill and so on. When I did start to play, it wasn't with any notion of wanting to be Clapton or Hendrix or a musician at all - what I wanted to do was write songs - and it seemed to do that I needed to play an instrument.
4. What genre of music do you listen to today?
Maria: I listen to a lot of electronic music of various genres, but also singer song-writer. I like the juxtposition between the synthetic and organic.
Jamie: I listen to wide range of music. (I have a monthly radio show on Get Ready Rock Radio called The Eclectic Mix where they basically let me play anything I want from my record collection.) So country, folk, singer-songwriter, jazz, prog, bluegrass, rock....
5. What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player?
Maria: I have an inclination towards 90's UK Garage. I cant explain or justify it in anyway, just one of those things!
Jamie: Ummm probably at the moment people would consider Lucy Hale's 'Road Between' a bit embarrassing. Although she's famous for being one of the stars of 'Pretty Little Liars', she's had a long background in country music and this album is obviously a work of love from her and certainly no teenage TV cash-in.
6. Where would you most like to perform?
Maria: Small venues
Jamie: Small venues everywhere.
7. If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?
Maria: Something art related probably
Jamie: Writing.
8. What instruments do you play?
Maria: vocals, flute and I have recently started cello, but Im not very good yet!
Jamie: Guitar mostly - though I've always felt more a songwriter than a musician.
9. If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
Maria: Id love to have a go at composing some drum and bass!
Jamie: I've already done punk, prog, folk, pop, rock, country, and quite a lot of music that would never fit neatly into any particular genre - that'll probably do me...
10. What other talents do you have?
Maria: I like drawing and crafting, although as to whether its a talent you'd have to ask my friends ;).
Jamie: I have absolutely no idea - perhaps best to ask my wife.
11. What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke?
Maria: I hate karaoke, which is weird for a singer! I have a high voice so nothings ever in the right key for me, and there's always so much pressure!
Jamie: I always tend to think more in terms of albums than individual songs, so n the car that would currenly be Lucy Hale's 'Road Between' and 'Argus' by Wishbone Ash - but next week you'd get a completely different answer :-)
12. If you could sing a duet with any musician, living or dead, who would it be?
Maria: Imogen heap without a doubt
Jamie: Wow. That is tough. Possibly Carole King - though I guess James Taylor already has that gig. So perhaps Ruth Moody - her 2010 record 'The Garden' is just about the most beautiful album I've ever heard.
13. What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
Maria: the fact that no-one buys music anymore
Jamie: Streaming.
14. What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
Maria: As below!
Jamie: Be original, write and play what you want, the audience will come to you. Don't play what you think people want to hear.
