Today's Guest is: Georgia of Urban Import
I’m a 20-something girl from the North East of England. I’ve always enjoyed writing and music, so last year I put the two of them together and created my blog, Urban Import. There I post the latest news and music on urban artists, as well as the odd off-topic post. When I’m not busy working, I’m blogging, writing books, and watching series on Netflix.

Why I like Rap Music
Growing up in the 90’s in Britain, I liked all the usual pop bands, from the Spice Girls and Steps to Liberty X and Hear’say. Britney was my absolute idol, and I think I’ll always hold a soft spot for her, but when I turned 12 or 13, my friends introduced me to Hip Hop and RnB, and so my love for that genre began.
To this day, when people ask me what type of music I like, and I reply “Hip Hop, RnB and Rap”, I get a funny look. I’m not sure what people expect my answer to be, but for some reason, they don’t expect that one. For people that don’t listen to that genre, they expect it all to be about money, drugs and violence, and sure, some of it is about that, but rap music is so much deeper than that.
I once heard someone say that rap music is just modern day poetry, and while it might sound a little corny, some of it really is. It’s an expressive type of music; it shows feeling like no other music can, and while I love to sing along to RnB, when I’m feeling in a funk, rap helps a lot; it’s therapeutic in some respects.
Rap music tells a story, and it doesn’t always have to be a personal one. Many rappers write songs about situations that aren’t from their own experiences. They’re someone else’s story, they’re an idea, a warning of what road not to go down. Some are haunting to listen to; just take Immortal Technique’s ‘Dance with the Devil’ for example, or Eminem’s ‘Stan’ which is probably better known. J Cole wrote the song ‘Lost Ones’ about a situation many young people have been in, though it’s not biographical.
I’ve included just some of my favourite lines taken from rap songs to show how it’s not all drugs and violence.
“My mind runs, I could never catch it,
Even if I got a head start”
‘Kid Cudi – The Prayer’
“Refuse to give up, your mistakes don't define you
They don't dictate where you heading, they remind you”
T.I - ‘Slide Show’
“Ambition is priceless; it’s something that’s in your veins”
Wale - ‘Ambition’
“We ain’t picture perfect, but we worth the pictures still”
J Cole - ‘Crooked Smile’
There’s a common misconception that all rappers are thugs, or that they’re unintelligent. The rapper T I is more articulate than me; I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t looked up a word or two before, and he’s had less formal education than I have. On the flipside, rapper J Cole graduated Magna Cum Laude from college, which as I understand from a British perspective (we don’t have those ranks here) is pretty much top of the class.
I guess what I’m trying to say is - don’t judge a book by its cover. Yes, there are rap songs that talk about how much money they have, or which girl they’re going home with, but there are meaningless songs across all genres. Sometimes, we just want a meaningless song to dance to or enjoy, without thinking of the deeper meaning, but rap music has a lot more to offer than what you see on the surface. Next time someone says they like rap music, don’t turn your nose up at the idea, because they might not be listening to the type of songs you think.
I hope that you enjoyed today's Guest. Be sure to visit their blog and social medias.
