Week 12! The Guest Blogger Series has been going very well. I can't even begin to tell you how much I have been enjoying our guest bloggers! Today's guest is in a band with her siblings, and she is going to share with us some of the dynamics of her family and what they listen to.


Today's Guest is: Kristyn Roberts Marrott

Kristyn is a recent college graduate that has come home to focus on music with her four siblings. As the lead singer/songwriter for Queens Over Kings, she looks forward to auditions in Florida this October and in California next January. She blogs about her experiences in the band over at Everything the Light Touches in between band practice, wifedom, puppy motherhood, and her job that actually pays her.

My family is very close. Heck, I don’t even know if “close” is an effective way to describe what the actual situation is. Right now there are three generations living under one roof – four if you accept the age gap between me and my brother to our three younger siblings as valid – as my parents are currently running a boarding/halfway house for married couples and retirees. Still, even with 12 of us somehow no one is dead yet and everyone continues to enjoy joking around in the kitchen, talking about life, and listening to music together. Many an evening or weekend is spent this way, for as long as I can remember.

Music is such a large part of our dynamic that my siblings and I have developed into a band. As we write our own songs, we recognize the character of our music comes from mixing not only our five personalities and preferences, but also generations of musical taste and identity. Beginning with my grandparents in the 1960s then going all the way to my time in high school as the new millennium rounded the corner, there are some songs, feelings, and artists we keep coming back to. Today I’d like to share our family playlist with you, a playlist for the generations, in hopes that you’ll be equally reminiscent and inspired. I tried keeping myself to a ten-song minimum, but as fellow music lovers I am sure you can applaud me in narrowing it down to just 22 songs over a 50 year period. And I left out so many artists that have memories for us such as The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Madonna, Duran Duran, Kenny Loggins, Smokey Robinson, Patsy Cline, Frank Sinatra, Dave Brubeck… The list could go on forever!

I’m sure if you take a listen to who we are as a band you’ll see how a playlist like this has left a lasting impression. History and family are so influential that we can’t even explain what kind of music we play. There is a running joke around here that we play “flazzy” music, or a mix of funk, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and indie. But I don’t think it should be any other way as we progress in our own songwriting and performing because, if I learned anything while earning a degree in Social Studies Education, History matters.
