Crosby Stills & Nash

A week or so ago, reader Penny McDaniel asked if "I had any Crosby, Stills, & Nash up my sleeve". My response is - You bet I do!  So, this post is for everyone to enjoy, but especially for reader Penny McDaniel.  (BTW - if you ever want me to explore any particular songs or artists, feel free to ask. My proverbial door is always open to suggestions and requests)

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash helped bridge the ‘60s and ‘70s with their harmonies and songs about peace and love during a time of war. The group formed after the three distinct singer-songwriters parted ways with their former bands: Crosby was in the Byrds, Stills was in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the Hollies. Later, Stills’ old bandmate Neil Young joined. They’ve been off and on, in various forms, over the years.

Crosby, Stills, & Nash's music first became a cornerstone of rock 'n roll with the self-titled 1969 debut LP, one of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Ever since -- through changing times, various configurations, and acclaimed solo careers-Crosby, Stills & Nash have continued to tour and record as "three together."

'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' is a medley of 'suites' about Stephen Stills girlfriend, Judy Collins. The lyrics to most of the suite's sections consist of his thoughts about her and their imminent breakup. Collins is known for her piercing blue eyes, which are referenced in the title. The song was first performed at Woodstock.

Crosby, Stills, & Nash actually formed in order to record "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". Stills and David Crosby had discussed the idea of creating a three-man vocal group, but were unable to find a suitable third partner. Among those seriously considered was John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful. At an informal gathering one evening, Stills and Crosby performed a two-voice version of a new song entitled "You Don't Have to Cry". Graham Nash, who was present at the gathering, asked the duo to sing the song again repeatedly. After several performances, Nash began singing the missing high vocal harmony, resulting in his joining the group shortly thereafter.

More than four decades since Crosby, Stills, & Nash first harmonized in Laurel Canyon, and played their first-ever concert as a trio at the legendary Woodstock festival, its members continue a creative partnership that is one of the most influential and enduring in music. David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash have each been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times-once with Crosby, Stills & Nash, and a second time with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies, respectively. They have also been inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, with the honor recognizing both Crosby, Stills, & Nash as a group, and each member as individual solo artists.
